Wine Teacher: Emilio

Emilio Saez van Eerd is married and has two children. In 2014 Emilio passed his Diploma Course and became a full time wine educator in 2017. Since 2018 he’s officially a WSET Certified Wine Educator.

Being raised in a family of mixed parents, with a Spanish father from La Mancha, and a dutch mother, who was a wine expert, wine has always been part of his culture. At the age of 22 he went to Jerez de la Frontera for a traineeship at Bodegas Domecq. There he decided to dedicate his life to wine.
For his study at the Rotterdam School for Economics he wrote a thesis on the “future of Sherry” and started as a sales manager for Bodegas Osborne Benelux.
After finishing his Master in Business Administration at the Nyenrode University in 1998, he moved to Spain and started his own company in the wine export consultancy. He became a Certified Sherry Educator in 2004 and gained broad experience in the Spanish wine tourism industry. In 2009 he returned to the Netherlands and selected wines and spirits at Jumbo Supermarkten. Since 2017 Emilio is a wine teacher for young upcoming sommeliers at the Academy for Gastronomy and at teaches WSET for students at the Hotel School in Maastricht. Currently, Emilio uses his vast knowledge about wine consumption preferences to create a new platform for online wine education in the foodretail.

“I believe that curiosity in wine is more important than wine knowledge itself. The more you know about wine, the more you know what you don’t know.”
