🍇Grape Variety 🍇 Chenin Blanc

Did you know that the International Drink Chenin Blanc Day is in June? So to celebrate, we tell you a little more about this variety

Chenin Blanc, also called Pinot de la Loire (pineau), is the flagship grape variety of the Loire Valley 🇫🇷 It would have originated in Anjou where it would have been cultivated by the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Maur located between Angers and Saumur since the 6th century.

Chenin Blanc is a great white grape variety that is particularly suited to chalky soils called tufa stones which were used to build the Loire castles. Its bunches are medium-sized, quite compact and its berries are more or less small. It is an early ripening variety, which resists diseases. Chenin has the particularity of being very versatile. It makes dry, sweet and sparkling wines!

Perfectly structured by acidity, elegant, with a complex nose and aromas of yellow fruits, dried fruits, citrus fruits, white flowers, honey... the wine made from Chenin Blanc is quite lively and vibrant, which allows it to be kept for a long time. Chenin covers about 10,000 hectares in France, and it is very productive in South Africa where it covers more than 26,000 hectares.
