WINE TRAVEL: Rosazzo wines from Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy

Rosazzo DOCG is a white wine produced in a small area in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, northeastern Italy. The appellation was created in 2011 from the Rosazzo subzone which was part of the appellation Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC. The territory of the appellation develops on a hilly area, characterized by having a friable and not very permeable soil. The climate is mild and perfect for white-grape varieties. The vineyards are climatically influenced by both the Julian Alps and the Adriatic Sea. The presence of the sea provides the zone with a maritime climate, with the extremes of summer and winter tempered by the water. The Alps provide shelter from cold winds from the north.

The Rosazzo DOCG wine is a blend of several varieties, with more than 50% of the local Friulano grape in the final wine. Other allowed varieties are Pinot Bianco, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, and a small amount of Ribolla Gialla. These complex wines offer up flavours of woody herbs, spices and dried fruit, with a characteristic underpinning minerality.

The Terre Alte Bianco Rosazzo DOCG by Livio Felluga estate vintage 2015 is a fantastic wine fully representing the characteristics of this region. The estate takes its name from its founder, Livio Felluga, who came to the region in the 1930s. Today, it is famous for its blended white wines made from Friulano, Pinot Bianco and Sauvignon grapes, estate-grown at Rosazzo in the historic Terre Alte vineyards. The Pinot Bianco and Sauvignon mature in stainless steel while the Friulano stays in small oak casks. After ageing for ten months, the wines are blended. The bottled wine is aged in temperature-controlled binning cellars for nearly 9 months.

The Terre Alte Bianco 2015 is a superbly elegant and complex wine with brilliant yellow colour. On the nose, rich bouquet of white flowers, canary melon and yellow peach with tropical hints of passion fruit and pineapple. Citrus aromas are enriched by elegant creamy sensations of pastry, candied almond and vanilla. The palate is mineral, savoury and round with pleasant acidic notes. The richness of tropical fruit, nuts and creamy notes is enhanced by spicy notes of white pepper and cardamom. The long finish is elegant and florid.
