THE TOP 3 WINES OF THE WEEKEND: ROSÉ FROM CÔTES DE PROVENCE

We will explore Côte de Provence, the largest appellation in Provence, by discovering 3 of its wonderful rosés from vintage 2018.

Here, the vines grow in a varied landscape, with prominent ranges of hills offering protection from the Mistral winds. We choose the vintage 2018 due to its cool, wet spring followed by higher than usual humidity, which led to the unusual problem of mildew. Vineyards along the coast were the most successful.

Nearly any black wine grape can be used to make rosé wine, however, there are several common styles and grapes that are preferred for rosé such as Grenache.

I ) Domaine des Mapliers, Abacus, Côtes de Provence 2018 – €20 Wine Searcher

This rosé is a blend of Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon cultivated in an integrated farm way. The Domaine des Mapliers, located in Lorgues in Provence AOC, has chosen a direct pressing of whole crop offering very pale salmon hue to the wine. Each variety and plot are vinified for 2 months separately in stainless steel tanks before being blended together. Only free-run juice is used for this wine.

On the nose, this wine displays rich and powerful summer fruits. Then, you will recognize on the palate scents of Reine Claude prunes and lychee ending on some white pepper notes. This wine is notable for its gorgeous balance of ripe fruit and saltiness.
